Kara looked up from her computer, startled by the slam of a car door out the front of the cottage. A well-established myrtle blocked her view of the road, not that she expected visitors. She returned her attention to compiling her email to Stellar Vineyards. She had negotiated a great price on the wine for the first jazz and wine tasting afternoon, scheduled for Saturday week. Kit and the other guys from his band were organized to arrive at Anna’s Place first thing the next morning. She had a long to-do list for them, which would hopefully transform the café within a forty-eight hour period.

A knock at the front door surprised her. Her heart fluttered. Had Steph decided to come over early? She looked down at her sweats and old t-shirt. She’d planned to shower and change before Steph arrived. There was no time now.

She opened the front door, and her heart dropped.

“Hey, babe.” Joel held out a stunning arrangement of red roses to her. “I couldn’t leave things the way they were. We need to talk.”

She took the roses and motioned for him to come in. Her voice seemed to have left her.

“Nice place.”

Kara guided him through to the small living room. She put the flowers on the sideboard and turned to face him, completely overcome with guilt. He looked terrible. His face was pale, and he had huge dark circles under his eyes. He’d also lost weight. She’d done this to him.

“I’m sorry.” Kara choked on her words as tears spilled down her cheeks.

Joel placed a paper bag on the sideboard then took her in his arms. Her instinct was to pull away, but the warmth of his embrace reminded her how close they’d been. He stroked her hair.

“It's okay. What happened is a blip, we can get things back on track. I know you freaked out. I should've listened to you. So many times you told me you didn't want a big wedding. We should've eloped.”

Kara's sobs became louder listening to Joel's words. He was mistaking her tears for regret that she’d ended their relationship. Her regret was for how much she’d hurt him, not for finishing things. And now, she would be hurting him even more.

She pulled away and wiped her eyes on her sleeve. “I'm sorry, Joel.”

He stepped closer but she shook her head. “No, please listen. I’m sorry, I’ve given you the wrong idea. I'm so sad at what I've done to you, to us, but…” her voice wobbled trying to get the words out, “…I made the right decision. Only I should've made it a lot earlier than I did.”

Joel stared at her. “Are you saying there's no hope for us?”

Kara nodded. “Let’s sit. We need to talk.”

They sat opposite each other in the tall armchairs.

“I really am sorry. I know words are never going to be enough. I should have spoken up a lot earlier. There’s no excuse other than I was confused and felt pressured to stay in our relationship. It clouded what I was really feeling.
